I have always had
the motivation to lead and influence. As a midwifery student, I was the student
representative in my college. Since
graduating I have volunteered as an intern with BMS, I have also supported a
telephone hotline for midwives/service-users, supporting members who contracted
COVID-19 and advocating at the highest levels for midwives to be supported and
enabled to continue providing midwifery care.
I have coordinated a tele-medicine project and managed an
internationally-funded project, equipping midwives to provide menstrual
regulation (MR), post-abortion care (PAC) and family planning (FP) to women in
areas severely affected by COVID-19.
Through my work with BMS, I had opportunity to support
midwives and to understand their lived experiences and challenges; these include
deployments outside midwifery’s scope-of-practice, workforce shortages, poor
working conditions, lack of career development opportunities, bullying and
harassment. This role will take me to
the next level of leadership and representation nationally.
As General Secretary I
will be responsible for developing, leading and overseeing BMS’s involvement
with midwifery practice sites. I understand the importance of a strong
association which can advocate for midwives and strengthen their voices,
especially during times of crisis.I
commit to fulfil my duties.Further, I
am committed to build on the work done to date on MR/PAC and FP, and supporting
midwives to perform their work in line with the midwifery SOP in an enabling
environment.I will use my position to
raise the voices of midwives at all levels.Through my work with BMS, I had opportunity to support
